I'm afraid I had difficulty taking this one in. I've not seen the first issue, and the characters and their relationships were confusing to me. The artwork is of a style I can't quite define, but that is often seen in 'realistic' strips by young cartoonists; somewhat stiff and stilted, the unique personal style not yet evolved. That said, there are some very striking panels.I particularly liked the studies of the character Kim's face on pages 7 and 15. The episode Hot Love Now begins promisingly, with a nightmare sequence in which protagonist Holden is yuckily devoured by friend Kim, for whom he secretly lusts... several sequences involving these characters and their confidantes discussing their individual romantic agonies ensue. I couldn't really get into the narrative, as I've said. It was a bit too busy, I didn't 'know' the characters, and wasn't motivated by what I saw of them, to familiarise myself with their personalities. It's obviously early in the story, though, and I wouldn't discount the possibility of this turning into a compelling slice-of-life series. Lee Kennedy |
