Geek-girl Mockingbird is stuck on the
remote planet Angel-Ten and someone wants to kill her!
(Surprisingly, in none of the three issues of Space... do
the authors succumb to the use of the phrase "To Kill A
Mockingbird"...). In the meantime, though, she meets a varied bunch
of wacky space people, creatures, and aliens whilst doing her best
to finish her essays and not get eaten. Flix Gilett's art is
suitably cartoony for such a 'cartoony' (in the 'Saturday Morning'
sense) story, evoking both Caspar Williams and, somehow, Picasso;
the writing is credited to Joy Jones, but I suspect Joy is actually
Flix with another hat on. It would be cruel to lift the edge of the
plot carpet to see what's been brushed underneath (e.g. how come
there only seem to be about 3 humans on the planet? What, exactly,
is Mockingbird doing there?), since this is a 'fun' story, as much
in need of deep analysis as an episode of Scooby Doo. All in all, a cute romp of a comic; however, since issue #3 is dated 1997 I'm fairly sure 'that's all she wrote' - a pity, 'cos we do rather want to find out what happens next... Terry Wiley. |
