Despite suffering from a severe ink shortage (the pages are so white!), Heironymus
Bush is a pretty good read in that kind of stream of consciousness 'I'm making
this up as I go along' vein. Which is fine by me, I like Shaky Kane and
this isn't a million miles away. The story is mostly nonsensical (again, not something I mind), following the random (though who knows where this will end up?) and bizarre travels and misfortunes of our eponymous hero. Looking part Alfred E. Neumann, part George Bush Jr, the story is packed with visual gags and flashes of laugh out loud humour. The artwork is energetic and fresh, I like it a lot, though the aforementioned lack of tones or spot-blacks of any kind gives it brevity, which perhaps suits the material, but stops it being anything special. It's a shame the packaging is so minimal as Heironymus Bush is certainly re-readable but unfortunately it's not the consumable fetish item it deserves to be. Mardou |
