Ralph Kidson is noted for humour and acute sense of comedic comics timing. I would say without reservation that he can be one of the countries funnies comics creators. In this comic he does not use comedy. He uses a curious notion (as per the title) & plays with it for 20 pages. Over the course of the 20 pages, the attention is held. Each panel advances from the next - the action may limit in scope, but there is no wastage - no repetitions. The observation of someone doing not much is very keen & the approach to each page keeps the eye involved. The only criticism I can see in the mechanics of the story is that Ralph's drawing style appears guttural & simple - & as it is very effective at conveying a great deal of information in this simple manner, therefore there is no spurious clutter to slow down the way the eye travels over the page - and thus it seems an all too swift read. It is quite an extraordinary little comics & a wonderful success as an artistic & theoretical exercise, but I do have reservations. I feel that the comic is something more for people who are either familiar & enjoy Ralph's work, or someone who is very much interested in the mechanics of comics. As someone who falls into both of these camps I feel beholden to point out that as fantastic as this comic is, it might not be something I could recommend to the nonchalant reader. mooncat Post Script: Having conferred with a fellow cartoonist regarding this comic, I can advise that they thought that this was the funniest thing that he's done in ages... All I can conclude from this is that I've forgotten where I left my funny bone again. |
